Portsea

Project Brief.

To transform a 20 year old residence into a next generation holiday home, by capturing the romance of a rural home with all the sophisticated life style of a contemporary city home. Our client purchased a 20 year old home with many unusual forms and asked us to expand the accommodation to suit family needs for a holiday house with the likelihood of becoming a permanent residence later.

Responding to the site was of utmost importance with the request that commanding golf course views to the South-East were to be featured in all living areas. Of particular importance was a requirement to have unbroken site lines through the house to the golf course from the family dining table, which would over look the pool. Careful management of the 2.5m site fall was required as the sunny north facing courtyard and pool were to be readily accessible from the family living areas and the master bedroom. The home was to provide a separate zone for guests.

High quality finishes throughout enhance a design which incorporates special client touches like the ‘egg’ bath and teak front door, both sourced from Bali.

Solution.

We created a dwelling as an object of desire with a sense of place. The use of large glazed areas and patios allowed the building to breath in the surrounding environment without compromising privacy. The steep site fall and prominent location allowed us to create a breath taking approach that gives the home a timeless sense of belonging. Encompassing the client’s needs we created several zones within the home, one for parents, children and grandchildren and guest with sleeping and recreation areas well defined and separate.

All living areas flow into outdoor areas and capture the bush and surrounding golf course. The stunning combination of external materials including limestone, aluminium cladding, Hardies wall cladding, render and glass provided durability and low maintenance. We used a simple colour palette based on the natural limestone to respect the subdued colours of the coastal location.

This home can accommodate a diverse range of occupants with differing recreational needs yet offers easy assimilation into a range of interlinked living spaces all of which gain by their indoor – outdoor relationships. High quality finishes throughout enhance a design which incorporates special client touches like the ‘egg’ bath and teak front door, both sourced from Bali.
Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.

What it meant to the client.

This extension and renovation gave the owners a spectacular transformation from the original 20 year old holiday house, into a home for the future able to generously accommodate family and friends.

They now have a dwelling that reflects their spirit of adventure and fun that wraps around a substantial pool precinct, whilst improving views over the adjoining golf course and beyond.
